The Martian Soars to $2.5 Million Thursday, Box office


Ridley Scott's Space film The Martian landed in theaters Thursday night, taking in a big $2.5 million in previews.

The Fox movie Opened in around 2,800 theaters last night to earn the biggest Thursday preview gross since Straight Outtalk  Compton's  $4.9 million in mid-August.

The film, starring Matt Damon as an astronaut who gets stuck on Mars, will top the weekend. It's opening in 3,826 North American theaters this weekend, and the strong start indicates that the film will likely surpass the initial debut estimates in the low $40 million range for a launch between $45 million and $50 million.

Drew Goddard adapted the script based on Andy Weir's best-selling book. Damon stars opposite Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen  Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan and Aksel Hennie.


Sony's The Walk, from director Robert Zemeckis, rolls out in roughly 440 Imax theaters this weekend. The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as French artist Philippe Petit, who gained fame after he walked on a high wire between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in 1974.
